Enroute:
We spent a relaxing few days in Koh Samui, where we stayed at the wonderful Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui. I decided on the Conrad for a few reasons. First of all, the hotel was very recently renovated, and the pictures online reflected that. They even provided Byredo toiletries. Secondly, I’d been meaning to stay more at Hilton properties to rack up some Hilton points. Lastly, while the Waldorf looked stunning, I would’ve booked it with Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts or something similar that came with a hotel credit. I find these credits to be somewhat of a burden at a city hotel where the f&b scene is far superior off campus.
With that out of the way, I had a satisfactory stay at the Conrad. Let’s get into the review.
Check-in:
The lobby was extremely busy when we arrived. The Chinese tourists are back! Even still, we were checked in quickly. Due to high occupancy, no suite upgrade was available, which was fair. We just received the standard executive lounge access on account of my Hilton Diamond status.
Unpack:
Upon entry, I thought the room was nice enough and felt relatively upscale. I particularly liked the use of wood that added a touch of warmth and oriental flair.
The size of the room was pretty standard. Immediately to the left was a well-lit bathroom, featuring a shower and a free standing tub. I must admit the bathroom was compact, especially the shower.
The highlight of the bathroom was definitely the Byredo products, which I vastly prefer to Diptyque.
I realized for some reason I forgot to take a picture of the bed. Oh well, I guess you’ll just have to take my word for it. The king bed was plush and comfortable, and the linens were of high quality. It actually reminded me of the bed at Conrad London St. James, at which I stayed many many years ago. I feel like the Conrad beds in the US aren’t nearly as nice…
The rest of the room had a couch, a coffee table, an armchair, a desk and an office chair.
Our room had a pretty extensive minibar selection, as well as the usual Nespresso.
Going back to the entryway you would find a (by Asian standard) petite closet.
Again, for a city business hotel, I thought the room was perfectly fine.
Refuel:
Since we had lounge access, we popped by to enjoy an evening cocktail before dinner one night.
I was pleasantly surprised by how extensive the service was - we were proactively offered a sampler of hors d'oeuvres and presented a cocktail menu. The lounge bartenders were happy to make pretty much any concoction you might have in mind.
Additionally, there were a few hot items on offer, along with a salad bar and desserts.
On the evening of our arrival, my mom wasn’t feeling too well, so we decided to just have dinner downstairs at the Kisara restaurant. The other dining venues of the hotel can be found here.
We started with some sashimi, sushi, and appetizers.
The main focus of the restaurant was actually teppanyaki, so we ordered some black cod, oysters, Hokkaido scallops and Australian M4 wagyu.
I’d say the food was good, though not extraordinary.
Breakfast was served at Cafe @2. The issue with breakfast was that it was simply overrun. They had to set up an overflow area into the hallway. Needless to say service took a bit of active follow-ups.
Breakfast was better than some, though not as good as others.
On Arrival:
The only other service I used at the hotel was its laundry service, which was prompt. The amenities included a rooftop pool, a gym and a spa. I was happy with my choice to stay at the Conrad. We didn’t spend too much time at the hotel, so it served our purpose by offering decent service and modern accommodation. I’d definitely recommend it if you have a quick overnight in town or don’t plan to be in your room much.
