Review - Canopy by Hilton Charlotte Southpark

Canopy by Hilton Charlotte Southpark

Enroute:

It’s that time of the year again - the days are getting noticeably shorter, the layers are getting heftier, and seasonal depression is becoming too much to bear. Thanks to the great work-life balance corporate America is promoting, my partner and I decided to abandon ship and migrate southbound for the winter. New York is dead anyways. Who wants to sit in an outdoor indoor dining shack risking their lives being taken by a M6 bus when you can be on a boat in South Florida? I’m joking. I don’t know where buses run.

Instead of hopping on the daily bus-like (I meant shuttle) air services to Florida, we wanted to make a road trip out of it and stop along the way, which brings us to Charlotte. We’ve actually lived in Charlotte for a few months for a short-term work project, so I was excited to be back. I LOVE the South, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Charlotte. Sure it’s boring and hippy as hell but HAVE YOU BEEN TO THEIR PUBLIX? I’ve never seen so many BMW/Mercedes/Audi in my life, and it truly is a yo pro middle class paradise. I don’t think people work much there because I’ve been to a cidery on a Monday in South End, and boy was it like an Alexander Wang sample sale.

But seriously though, Charlotte is beautiful. I loved running in the city through the neighborhoods - we lived in Uptown so I always ran around the Carolina Panthers’ stadium. The parks were clean, the trees were exuberant, and everywhere I went I could take two parking spots and nobody would have a problem with me. Actually that might just be me. Southern men adore me and I can get away with a lot over there lol. People were constantly having a good time. I guess it’s what not having to work 80-100hrs does to you. It makes you happy. Who would’ve thought? The South is a whole vibe, and I’m obsessed.

On the other end of things, I don’t think Charlotte’s hotel scene is all that inspiring? We lived in an apartment so never stayed at any hotel. Since my partner’s friends all lived in Myers Park, we booked the adjacent Canopy by Hilton Southpark. Myers Park is a residential suburb, and Southpark is an area with corporate offices and malls. For those of you in DC, think of it as Tysons Corner. I believe the Canopy is the newest hotel in the area.

Check-in:

I’ve never stayed at a Canopy before. The brand itself is quite young, only a few years old. We self parked outside and headed in for check-in. The front desk agent was very friendly, and we were on our way to our room within minutes. Due to the location, there wasn’t much in terms of views. The building felt like a nice serviced rental building.

Unpack:

The first impression of the room was decent - it was nicely appointed and still smelled new. By the entrance there was an open closet.

Next to the closet was a coffee maker.

To the opposite side was the bathroom.

The design was definitely on the hip side, but it was well done so it didn’t feel cheap. I didn’t expect to see bathrobes, not to mention such comfy ones. Interestingly, instead of the usual slippers, there were thick orange socks which I thought were just so fun and clever.

The bedroom was cozy, with a lounger by the window.

I’m confident the Residence Inn across the street was nowhere near as nice.

Overall I thought the room was perfect. The color was playful, and the little details were cute. We refreshened up and went out to meet a few friends. The next morning, we had breakfast at the hotel before getting back on the road.

Refuel:

The restaurant Fine & Fettle was on the ground floor and had outdoor seating as well. Breakfast was complimentary for Honors Gold and above members. I don’t exactly remember the credit amount but it was plenty for both of us. We shared some pancakes and a breakfast bowl with grits, kale, sausage and egg. Both were pretty good.

Depart:

We had a quick but lovely stay at the Canopy Charlotte. The room was new and comfortable, and the service was extremely friendly. If you ever find yourself in the area, this hotel is a lot better than the other more dated options.
